OOur Freedom movement gathered momentum in the early thirties and brought about a new awakening amongst the Freedom seeking inteligentsia. They realised that Nation Bulding could be possible only by rapid promotion of indigenous resources, both human and natural and also the development of education and technology amongst the masses. On the same thoughts, a few eminent patriotic Scientists and Engineers promoted the fomation of The India Soclety of Enginsers to advance manpower development in the field of Engineering, Science & Technology. In August 1934, the Society started functloning with a very limited number of Members after registered under the Societies Registration Act. In course of years and with the constant efforts of Members and Well-wishers, it expanded steadiy its spheres of activities and\Membership strength of about 9000 all over the World, and it has chapters all over India and abroad, It has on record the association of a number of eminent personalities like Sir C. V. Raman, Dr. Triguna Sen. Dr.K. L. Rao, Dr. H. N. Senthna, Dr. Raja Ramanna, Dr. S. Varadarajan, Dr. B. D. Nagchaudhuri, Prof. U. R. Rao, Shri S. Krishnakumar, Prof. S. K. Khanna and few more eminent persons of India.
It may also be noted that Society had its glorious moments in 1984-“85 celebrating the Golden Jubilee when Hon’ble Giani Zail Singh, the-then President of India, inaugurated the year long function on 07th February, 1984. The society had also celebrated its Diamond Jubilee on October 28, “95. The function was inaugurated by His Excellency Shri K. V. Raghunatha Reddy, Governor, W.B.
The Society is to disseminate the knowledge of science and technology and to promote the industrial climate holds panel discussions, seminars, symposia and workshop on technical subjects of topical interests and offers technical and project consultancy and service to the industries for better management and increased productivity also.
The society’s name has been included in the “List of Scientific Bodies of India published in 1950 under the Authority of the Departments of Scientific Reserach, Government of India, as per letter No. F 78/30/49 – (SA) – 15829 dated 10th November, 1949 of Department of Scientific Research Organisation in India.” World Federation of Engineers Organisation (WFEOIFMOI) under UNESCO had confirmed by a letter No. DJD 34, 1991 dated 11 th April, 1991, the affiliation to India Society of Engineers in the Engineering Stream of the World Forum.The society’s name has been included in the “List of Scientific Bodies of India published in 1950 under the Authority of the Departments of Scientific Reserach, Government of India, as per letter No. F 78/30/49 – (SA) – 15829 dated 10th November, 1949 of Department of Scientific Research Organisation in India.” World Federation of Engineers Organisation (WFEOIFMOI) under UNESCO had confirmed by a letter No. DJD 34, 1991 dated 11 th April, 1991, the affiliation to India Society of Engineers in the Engineering Stream of the World Forum.
Society has provided with the Aids from Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India for their technical activities and in R & D Areas earlier.
Considering the constructive activities of India Society of Engineers as a N.G.O., His Excellency, the Governor of West Bengal has alloted a plot of,land at Salt Lake (Sector-I, CK-46) by letter No. 2475- SL (AL)y21 -58/84 (Pt) dated 29.10.1986 for constructing the ISE’s own Building wherefrom the following activities will be conducted/organised:
  1. To impart training in every branch of Science & Engineers and other advanced principles of knowledge.
  2. To arrange to popularise Science & Engineering products of the Country.
  3. To conduct regular examinations, courses to qualify students, technicians and engineers to the different grades of Membership and issuing Society Diplomas or Certificates.
  4. To impart advice and suggestions to the Government, Local Bodies or Corporate Houses in all Technical or Scientific matters.
  5. To encourage Industry-institution interactions and to promote indigeneous know-hows.
